I have just discovered that you can use your own SMTP server for individual custom from addresses in Gmail. I guess the main question is why would you want to do it? well in my case there are a few reasons:

  1. It prevents that irritatingĀ  From username@gmail.com on behalf of username@mycompany.com” bit which is added when you use Gmails SMTP server
  2. It means that the messages I send are signed by my SMTP server; as I use Domain Keys

Setting up custom from addresses with your own SMTP server couldn’t be easier:

  1. Log into your Gmail account
  2. Go to Settings at the top right hand corner
  3. Click on the “Accounts and Import” Tab
  4. Under the “Send mail as:” section, click the “edit info” link next to the account that you want to set up with your SMTP server
  5. Click the “Next Step” button
  6. Click the “Send through [YOUR DOMAIN] SMTP servers” option
  7. Enter your SMTP server login details
  8. Save Changes

This was the official release post on the gmail blog.
